Office of the Auditor-General

The Auditor-General is appointed by the President on recommendation of thePublic Service Commission and the approval of the National Assembly in;terms of Article 127 of the Constitution of Namibia and derives his duties and power from Section 25 and 26 of the State Finance Act, 1991 (Act 31 of 1991).

The Auditor-General is appointed for a period of five years, renewable. The Auditor-General is not a member of the Public Service. The Auditor-General can leave office by resigning and cannot be removed from office unless 2/3 majority of all members of Parliament vote for his/her removal on the grounds of gross misconduct or mental incapacity.Read More

Regional & International Stakeholders

The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) is a member of International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and has since 2010, adopted the International Standards for Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAIs) framework.

INTOSAIs has 7 regional working groups of which the African Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI) is the group representing Africa. AFROSAI has three (3) sub-regional organizations to represent SAIs in English (AFROSAI-E), Arabic (AFROSAI-A) and French (AFROSAI-F) speaking countries.

The Auditor-General of Namibia has been the Vice President of AFROSAI and Chair of its Finance and Administration Committee from 2017 - 2020.

Did You Know

  • With 218 staff of which 78% are auditors, to date we celebrate 1685 audit reports that have been tabled in the National Assembly.
  • We have audited SACU (current), SADCOPAC and SADC Accounts (3years each).
  • Our annual capacity can produce more than 170 audit reports (in current years) carry out more than 120 asset inspections and special investigations.
  • We got awards at Career fair and Trade fair in 2011.
  • The Auditor-General was elected and appointed, by the General Assembly of AFROSAI in Gabon-2011, to the Governing Council (the continent highest leadership body of Auditors-General) for 3 years.
  • The Auditor-General got an award for “Invaluable Service as Founding Chairperson of AFROSAI-E (2005-2010) in 2011.
  • We successfully hosted the 21st Common wealth Auditors General conference and other International events.
  • On 22 December 2011 the 66th United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/66/209 “Promoting the efficiency, accountability, effectiveness and transparency of public administration by strengthening supreme audit institutions.
  • Therein, the General Assembly for the first time expressly recognizes that Supreme Audit Institutions can accomplish their tasks objectively and effectively only if they are independent of the audited entity and are protected against outside influence.
